When planning a weekend in Wrocław, you can make a long list of must-visit places: the Town Hall, cozy colorful townhouses on the Market Square, searching for the famous dwarfs, or walking around the islands of the Oder River. But there is one location that deserves an entire separate day of your trip. It is the Wrocław Zoo (ZOO Wrocław).

Wrocław Zoo: how much it costs, how to get there, and what you absolutely must seeWrocław Zoo: how much it costs, how to get there, and what you absolutely must see

This is not just the oldest zoo in Poland, founded back in 1865, but a true metropolis for animals where an atmosphere of respect for nature reigns. There are no depressing cramped cages from the last century here; instead, huge ecosystems have been created where wild inhabitants feel completely at home. People come here not simply to “look at animals in captivity,” but to peek behind the scenes of wildlife itself.

Whether you are traveling alone, with friends, or with children, this walk will stay in your memory for a long time. And so that your trip goes smoothly without unpleasant surprises, we have gathered all the practical tips and financial nuances in one place.

How much does a ticket to the world of wildlife cost? (And how can you save money?)

Penguins at Wrocław Zoo

Let’s start with the most important practical aspect — ticket prices. And here comes the main life hack: buy your tickets online in advance. Wrocław Zoo has introduced a system that encourages visitors to reduce queues at ticket offices. If you purchase your ticket online through the official website, you save a very decent amount of money. Tickets bought at the on-site ticket office are noticeably more expensive, and during the high season you may spend about an hour standing in line.

Please note: The Wrocław Zoo price list may be updated periodically depending on the season and the zoo’s internal policy. Since prices change, it is best to check the current rates on the official website zoo.wroclaw.pl before your trip.

When checking the current Wrocław Zoo price list, pay attention to the main ticket options:

  • Regular ticket: when purchased online, prices start from 69 PLN, while at the zoo ticket office you will already have to pay 99 PLN.
  • Reduced ticket: online prices start from 59 PLN, while at the ticket office — 89 PLN. It is intended for children, students up to 26 years old, and pensioners.

Family tickets to Wrocław Zoo:

  • “Family 2+2” option (two adults and two children up to 21 years old): online from 225 PLN (at the ticket office — 329 PLN).
  • “Family 2+3” option (two adults and three children): online from 235 PLN (at the ticket office — 349 PLN).

Important detail: Children under 3 years old and seniors aged 75+ can enter the zoo for free! To do this, simply go to the ticket office or customer service point (POK) with a document confirming age and receive a free control coupon.

If you permanently live in Wrocław and have the Nasz Wrocław resident card, a regular ticket will cost only 40 PLN, and a reduced ticket — 20 PLN. You can also find special combo offers on the website (for example, a family ticket for ZOO + the Hydropolis water museum or ZOO + Aquapark), which is very convenient for busy weekends.

And most importantly: any purchased tickets to Wrocław Zoo already include entry to the famous Afrykarium. No additional payment on-site is required! If you wish, when purchasing tickets online, you can also donate 1–2 PLN to help save endangered animal species (the ZOO na Ratunek campaign).

Opening hours: there is an important nuance here!

The main rule to remember: Wrocław Zoo operates every single day, 365 days a year, without any exceptions or holiday closures. Even on Easter, Christmas, or New Year’s Day, the animals are waiting for visitors.

However, the opening hours of Wrocław Zoo change depending on the season. In addition, the grounds, pavilions, and ticket offices close at different times:

  • During the warm season (from April to September): from Monday to Thursday, ticket offices operate from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, pavilions are open until 5:45 PM, and the zoo grounds and Afrykarium remain open until 6:00 PM. On Fridays, weekends, and holidays, everything works one hour longer: ticket offices until 6:00 PM, and visitors can walk around the grounds until 7:00 PM!
  • During the transitional months (March and October): ticket offices close at 4:00 PM, while the grounds remain accessible until 5:00 PM (on weekends ticket offices work until 5:00 PM, and the grounds until 6:00 PM).
  • In winter (from November to February): the days are shorter, so ticket offices work only until 3:00 PM, while the pavilions and zoo grounds close at 4:00 PM.

Please note: You can enter the zoo only during ticket office opening hours. Even if you have an electronic ticket or an annual pass, the turnstiles will not let you in after the ticket offices are closed. So come earlier! For a relaxed visit, plan to spend at least 4–5 hours there.

How to get there: from the train station straight to the lions

The zoo is located in a picturesque district of Wrocław, not far from the famous Centennial Hall (Hala Stulecia) and Szczytnicki Park. Getting here from the city center is incredibly easy.

  • By public transport: Direct trams (for example, No. 2 and No. 10) run here from the main railway station (Wrocław Główny). You need the ZOO stop. Public transport in Wrocław runs like clockwork, and you can buy a ticket directly inside the tram by tapping your bank card on the validator.

Helpful tip: City transport routes may change due to road repairs or holiday schedules. Therefore, it is best to check current routes and real-time transport schedules through Google Maps or the popular Polish app Jakdojade — they instantly show the best route and the exact arrival time of the tram you need.

  • By car: Near the zoo (next to Centennial Hall) there is a large underground paid parking lot. However, on weekends and holidays it fills up almost instantly. If possible, it is better to leave your car behind and use the tram — it will save you both time and nerves.
  • A romantic route: During the warm season, you can reach the zoo by passenger boat from the pier near the main building of the University of Wrocław or from the panoramic Cathedral Island (Ostrów Tumski). It is a special kind of pleasure!

The main pride: the Afrykarium of Wrocław Zoo

Afrykarium at Wrocław Zoo

Even if there were nothing else in this zoo, it would still be worth visiting for this one attraction alone. This is the Afrykarium of Wrocław Zoo, a unique oceanarium with no comparable large-scale equivalent anywhere in Europe. It is a huge ultramodern pavilion entirely dedicated to the flora and fauna of the “black continent.”

Here you enter a completely different world. The main attraction of the Afrykarium is an 18-meter transparent acrylic underwater tunnel that recreates the depths of the Red Sea. When a huge shark, a graceful stingray, or a giant sea turtle slowly swims directly above your head, it takes the breath away from both children and adults alike.

Moving further on, you will find yourself on the coast of Namibia, home to funny African penguins and seals, peek into the underwater world of the Congo River where hippos live (watching these giants “fly” underwater as lightly as ballerinas is an unbelievable sight), and enter humid jungles where tropical birds fly freely.

What else is absolutely worth seeing?

Besides the Afrykarium, the zoo’s territory of more than 33 hectares is home to many other amazing inhabitants:

  • Rare animals: Wrocław Zoo is famous for saving endangered species. Here you can see mysterious okapis (forest giraffes), majestic snow leopards, Indian rhinos, and incredible, good-natured manatees.
  • Madagascar Pavilion: A place where you can meet lemurs, just like in the famous animated movie.
  • Children’s zone (Ranch): If you are visiting with little kids, be sure to stop by. Here children can pet domestic animals and feed goats with special food sold in vending machines.

Getting around inside: how to make your walk enjoyable

Wrocław Zoo map

To keep your day from turning into chaotic wandering, the first thing you will need at the entrance is a map of Wrocław Zoo. You can photograph it near the main gate or download the interactive version. The territory is huge, there are many pavilions, and without some guidance it is easy to miss something interesting or get lost among the paths.

Two important things for comfort:

  • Wooden carts: Right near the entrance (behind the turnstiles), you can rent a small wooden cart on wheels. If you are visiting with small children — take one without hesitation. You can put backpacks and jackets inside, and when the child gets tired, they will happily ride in it like in a little carriage.
  • Food and relaxation: There are many food courts, ice cream stands, and cafés on the territory. However, the prices here are predictably tourist-level. Many locals bring water, sandwiches, and fruit with them and arrange small picnics on specially equipped green lawns under sprawling trees.

Wrocław Zoo is a place that brings adults back to childhood while opening a huge, colorful world to children. Put on your most comfortable sneakers, bring a good mood and a fully charged phone for hundreds of amazing photos. Enjoy your walk!

And after you walk more than 15,000 steps, admire all the sharks in the Afrykarium, and become completely exhausted (in the best possible sense of the word), you will definitely work up a huge appetite. Cooking dinner yourself after such an adventure is a real challenge, so it is better to leave it to the professionals.

A perfect ending to such a busy day would be ordering sushi from Roll Club. It is a trusted and super convenient option: you can visit the website, choose your favorite rolls (Wrocław loves them for their generous fillings and fresh fish), or order hearty sushi sets for the whole company delivered straight to your home or hotel. By the time you get back with funny memories and photos, a fresh dinner will already be waiting for you.

Enjoy your walk through the zoo and have a delicious rest afterward!
